Living with Covid-19

The world as we know it, has changed. It is still changing, evolving, adapting to the calamity that has befallen. A novel version of seemingly innocuous flu, has brought the world and its superpowers to their feet. The city of Mumbai, known for its spirit, one which has stood tall and recovered from floods of 2005, attacks of 2008, torrential rains, a city of dreams and livelihood to millions across the country, has come to a grinding halt, courtesy to a pathogen from corners of Wuhan. Not just Mumbai, metropolitans of New York, Paris, London are seeing empty streets, faces with masks, citizens locked in for their own freedom from the virus. A story of a global pandemic of the movies which has an infection growing from an individual to millions, news headlines of death and recession that replaces stories of celebrities & glamour, exotic vacations, high flyers and experimental cuisine, is no more abstract. It has come knocking at our doors, and we are locked inside.

We are going back to many of old Indian traditions of hygiene and healthy eating. Washing hands many times, Namaste instead of a hand shake, removing footwear before entering home, hydrating ourselves, boosting immunity through lime water, turmeric, ginger etc.

There are potentially 100s of vaccines being developed worldwide concurrently. Everyday we see some pharma company claiming successful trials, and a huge hoopla around the potential panacea available to the world. Only to see a debunking of these claims days later, with a lot of profit booking. And all of us clinging on the dwindling hopes of a cure-all.

The probability of a vaccine and faster treatment is still high, with so much advancement in science, and sharing of knowledge, however we have seen many virus being endemic to our population despite the vaccines and treatment. The virus itself mutating may just lead us to a game of a catch-up. Working on having herd immunity by removing social restrictions may backfire, as the disease has more virulence and fatality than others.

We may have to prepare ourselves to living with Covid-19.

Scary as it may sound, it is apprehension, a fear of unknown that may make us anxious, but we still are living in the world of viruses which we have good control on. But till the time we have medicines to help us against Covid 19, we need to work on ourselves. It has never been as important.

There is no arguing that our reckless eating habits, and lifestyle unheeding to hygiene and sustainability of environment has been an instrument of creation of this pandemic.

We need to work on what we eat, how we grow our produce, how clean and unadulterated it is. Exercising and eating right, to maintain healthy metabolism, immunity, stamina, strength are the new lifestyle mantras.

There is a sense or urgency on creating an ecosystem empowering healthier food habits and lifestyle, to get our bodies ready for facing onslaughts of future such infections.
